  1. Czechoslovakia is composed of three very old sountries, Bohemia, Moravia,
  2. and Slovakia.  The Republic of Czechoslavakia was established after World
  3. War I, in 1918 and incorporated these three nations into the new republic.
  4. Hitler gained control of the Sudetenland, an area of western Bohemia with
  5. German ties, by stirring up anger amongst the Germans living there and
  6. promising France and England that there would be peace after that.  Hitler
  7. and Mussolini did not follow this agreement and they went on to occupy
  8. Czechoslavakia and exterminate the Jews who lived there.  
  9. After World War II, Czechoslovakia became a communist country in 1948.  A
  10. one party system was established and a harsh Stalinist period followed. 
  11. Opposition was violently suppressed by the government.
  12. In 1968 the Russians, Polish, East Germans, Hungarians, and Bulgarians
  13. invaded Czechoslovakia to stop its liberalization.  Repression was severe and
  14. many people fled or suffered.  Czechoslovakia is industrialized and
  15. technologically advanced in comparison with other Eastern European countries
  16. but its recent progress has been on the decline because of the government's
  17. opposition to economic reform.
